While processing a collection of Civil War scrapbooks, I was surprised to find imagery that reminded me of today's internet memes. A meme is a graphic often encountered on social media, combining an image and a comical phrase that is widely circulated and shared. Examples include success kid celebrating life's small victories and Grumpy Cat being, well, grumpy. The Civil War images I encountered were quick to consume and lightly lampooned current events. While today's memes and political cartoons spread through posts on Facebook and Twitter, these images spread through the mail. You didn't even have to open your mail to encounter it—the image was right on the envelope in many cases! Writing letters was one of the few ways to stay in touch with family members separated by war and the messages on the envelopes were an easy way to flaunt one's attitudes about the war. 4 fascinating examples of Civil War humor. Rebecca Kuske is a reference intern for the Archives Center at the National Museum of American History.

1. At the start of the novel, Evan is throwing a baseball up and down, and he thinks, "The thought that if he missed he'd probably break his nose made the game just interesting enough" (1). Why might he feel this way? The game is more interesting to Evan, because of the risk he is taking. He may miss the baseball and hurt himself, which makes the game feel more dangerous. He does not really want to break his nose but wants to take the chance, so he feels excitement. Mrs. Treski tries to throw the air conditioner out, but it is too heavy. Evan hears his mother scraping it across the floor above him when he is in the basement. The Treski's have to leave it there until someone, like the Sear's guy, who is strong, enough can move it. 2. Why has the Treski family not put their old air conditioner in the trash? The Lemonade War Short Essay - Answer Key.
